New York, New York!

I have just booked my trip to NYC for September. Talk about being totally excited! My only worry now is transportation. Most of the places we are visiting are within walking distance. However, the airport to hotel, and hotel to Yankee Stadium are going to be a challenge. I don't know if taking a cab is the best thing to do ($$$?), or if there are other "safer" means of transportation. I will probably look like a total tourist in my Kansas garb. Oh well, it's booked and I am going!

I would love any feedback on NYC and the "best practices" as far as transportation and seeing the sights. Please let me know.

Metrocard, baby!

New York has a kick-ass subway system... getting to Yankee Stadium that way is pretty easy. A cab will just get you snarled in traffic, likely. Especially on game day.

Shoot me a note at Rich at Championable.com! I'd be glad to get you some PDFs of the subway system, etc.

its been years since I was in NYC, probably when I was a kid traveling with my parents, but my brother just went specifically to go to ground zero a couple of years ago and he said it was unbelievable, a must see.

I grew up near New York but I don't know my way around it real well. It's a great place and the food is amazing!

Presuming you arrive in NYC during daylight hours, I think you will find the subway a truly wonderful means of transportation that is far more cost effective than a taxi. I feel overall that the subway is VERY, VERY safe even in most locations at night... so if you travel during daylight, you should feel very comfortable.

I agree-- the subway is safe during the day and everyone takes the subway. Send me an email and I'll give you my cell if you want to ask any questions over the phone. Which neighborhood are you staying in?

Yay! You're going to love NY!

I've never been to NY. I've always had the impression that it's dangerous, but that might just be a stereotype of the media.

However, if you should ever get assaulted anywhere at anytime, go for the throat. Just shove your hand against their windpipe. Going for the groin is too predictable. But you take a shot when you can get it, assuming you can't just run away first.

Sounds fun! :)

The subway is quite decent, as others have mentioned. Taxis are everywhere and not too pricey for getting around the city (compared to the fares in Boston, anyway). Not sure about the best bet to and from the airport b/c I usually drive to NYC.
